Be Your Own Superwoman!

It can be easy to fall into the trap of trying to prove our self-worth, push ourselves past our limits, in simple terms – be perfect. This is not a mindset or approach that will lead to success. In fact, the known “Superwoman Syndrome” refers to when a woman neglects herself because she is seeking to “do it all” to perfection and ends up stretching herself too thin. 

As a perfectionist, you probably set extraordinarily high goals for yourself and you constantly worry about measuring up to those goals, to the point that, success is rarely satisfying because you always believe you could have done a better job

The truth is, you do not need to be a Superwoman to advance in your career and be successful, you don’t need to overwork yourself to the point of burnout. What you need is to develop the right habits and make sure you are living a balanced life. What does that mean? Well, it can be different for everybody. Here are a few things that we all can share as “boxes to check” that will definitely lead to our success: 

  • Be intentional about your career
  • Know your value and be ready to talk about it
  • Ask for what you want, be courageous
  • Develop a growth mindset
  • Set aside personal time (“me” time)
  • Exercise often and practice mindfulness
  • Learn to say no

Before we move on, I want to talk a little more about mindfulness. This is a very powerful practice, and it builds four traits that every great leader has:

  1. Resilience
  2. Self-awareness
  3. Emotional Intelligence
  4. Powerful Mindset

These are the foundational things that will help you to completely transform your career! Taking time to become more knowledgeable in your space, networking in order to build new relationships, building your brand, and putting your best foot forward in your daily activities is the “extra credit” that will only build your momentum faster! 

Remember, you have to create a strong foundation to build on. You have to focus on the person in the mirror, first!

To my fellow Latinas, I want you to know that I understand the perfectionist trap’s cultural significance. I grew up with the belief that I had to get all “A” s and be outstanding at everything I did, feeling as though both I and my work had to be 100% perfect 100% of the time. I have spent most of my adult years cultivating a life of self-sufficiency and independence. While this can be more challenging to overcome, it is all the more reason for you to follow this advice.

Make it a point to celebrate the awesome things you do in the same way you would celebrate the accomplishments of a loved one. Throw a dinner party, go out for drinks, or treat yourself to something you love doing. By cheering yourself on in these ways, you’ll start rewiring how your brain thinks, and become more aware that you’re doing an awesome job!

I accomplished the great things that I have by applying the principles I now coach other women to follow. A few years ago, I decided to hang up my superwoman cape away and be content with who I am without trying to be perfect and measure up to everybody else standards. I defined what success meant to me, and I am accomplishing it in my own terms. I want to see you successful too, and that’s why I focus on coaching driven women who are determined to excel in their work and live a fulfilled life! You have the ability to do this too and you don’t have to do it on your own. 

So how can you live on your own terms, honor your various responsibilities, and be a high performer in your field of expertise? 

The answer is very simple. 

Your ability to excel in the workplace comes down to developing the right habits, mastering your mindset and the stories you keep telling about yourself and being consistent at it. You can accomplish your goals and live your dreams on your terms
